Vintage Season Refrigeration Checklist

Vintage season pushes winery refrigeration systems to their limits. This checklist helps you get ahead of breakdowns before harvest hits.

Vintage Season Refrigeration Checklist

August 26, 2026

Vintage season is the most demanding time of year for winery refrigeration systems. Glycol chillers, fermentation tank cooling, and cold storage all need to perform flawlessly under sustained, high-intensity load — often for weeks on end without a break. A single equipment failure during harvest can put an entire batch at risk, making pre-season preparation one of the most important steps a winery can take.

Why vintage season is different Outside of harvest, most winery refrigeration systems operate well within their capacity. During vintage, that changes dramatically. Fermentation generates significant heat that must be managed continuously to protect wine quality, and cold storage and processing areas are often working at or near full capacity for extended periods. Systems that perform perfectly fine the rest of the year can be pushed to their limits during peak vintage demand — which is exactly when a failure is most costly.

A pre-vintage refrigeration checklist

1. Schedule a pre-season inspection Before harvest begins, have a qualified technician inspect compressors, glycol systems, and control systems. This is the single most effective step in preventing an unexpected failure once vintage is underway — problems identified now can be fixed on a normal schedule rather than during a crisis.

2. Test backup capacity If your winery has backup cooling capacity or redundancy built into the system, confirm it’s actually functional before you need it. A backup system that hasn’t been tested in months is a risk in itself.

3. Check refrigerant and glycol levels Low glycol or refrigerant levels are among the most common causes of reduced cooling performance, and they’re also one of the easiest things to check and top up ahead of time.

4. Inspect seals, pumps, and distribution lines Glycol distribution systems rely on pumps and sealed lines to move cooling capacity where it’s needed. Leaks or failing pumps reduce overall system efficiency exactly when you need maximum performance.

5. Confirm emergency support access Know who to call, how quickly they can respond, and what the process looks like if something goes wrong mid-vintage. Having this sorted out in advance — rather than scrambling to find a technician during a crisis — can save critical hours during a breakdown.

6. Review maintenance history Look back at any recurring issues from previous vintages. If a particular component or system has caused problems before, address it proactively now rather than hoping it holds up under pressure again.

The cost of being unprepared A refrigeration failure during vintage doesn’t just mean a repair bill — it can mean lost fermentation temperature control, compromised batches, and significant financial loss on product that took a full growing season to produce. Compared to the cost of a pre-season inspection, the risk simply isn’t worth taking.

Priority support when it matters most Our team offers priority scheduling and rapid-response support specifically for wineries during vintage season, because we understand that a delayed response during harvest carries a different level of risk than at any other time of year. Getting ahead of vintage season with a proactive check gives you one less thing to worry about when harvest arrives.
